ONE KISS OF THE ETERNAL – SOCIAL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY BY TEO BEE YEN

Yi People from Da Liang Mountain

The lens are the eyes of the human soul, it reflects the essence of life and explore the truth of the world. The lens are the angels of beauty; they are like the olive branch of light and shadow that builds a bridge of peace and friendship among people of different races.

Born in Quanzhou city, Fujian Province, China, renowned photographer Teo Bee Yen came by boat to Malaysia with his parent when he was little. He grew up in difficult conditions. When he was older, he went to Singapore to work as a labourer. After surmounting much hardship, he eventually started his own business and with much diligence he became a very successful businessman. The early difficulties and sufferings he had gone through in life moulded him to be tough and resolute; but at the same time, it also nurtured him into a compassionate and loving person. These qualities are vividly apparent in his photographic works.

These children were so adorable. But on a closer look, you couldn’t help but sympathise with them as they were wearing clothes donated by the Red Cross.

Sheep also wants to rush home for some warm in the cold weather.

This is a traditional but unique way of fishing

This boat is their only “home”, where they live,
cook, sleep, or fish - all done right here.

The photographs in this exhibition by Teo Bee Yen are presented in black and white. From the photos, we see the gaze of the unyielding and confident siblings of the Yi Tribe from Da-Liangshan Mountains; the pursuit of beauty by the little sisters at a roadside vegetable stall in Kathmandu; the contented and relaxed small traders at Tonle Sap attap house, as well as the honest and jovial descendants of the Bajau Tribe who live off the sea from Semporna, Sabah.

From this photographic exhibition, we see not only the poverty and adversity of the people from the lower rung of society who live in harsh environments, but we also witness their nature-loving and contented lives as well as their positive attitude despite being poor. This is something modern urbanites should ponder and learn from.

This is their means of transportation.
Everyday, they start their journey by cramming into a mini lorry.

Life is difficult and so two young sisters have to walk far and wide
to collect wood for use at home.

They usually cook and dine outside the tent, and sleep within covered tents at night, hence, explaining their limited area of movement. The woman in this photo is physically challenged, but her spirit to carry on living is worth learning.
